Home - Old & New

I love to combine old and new pieces, especially when they have a story to tell.

Antiques & Repurposed

This cutie chest of drawers is likely at least 100 years old, if not older. It was in my daddy’s home when he was a child, moved to my teenage bedroom, our oldest daughter’s bedroom and now sits in our foyer. It’s been stripped and painted over the years. The last one to change it was my daddy when he painted it with enamel for our daughter’s room. Recently, we wanted to repaint it in a green tone but it would’ve been quite the job to strip and sand the enamel. So, we’ve left it the same white my daddy lovingly painted it all the years ago. It’s special to know when you touch it, his hands touched it, too.

surprise storage

I bet you wouldn’t have guessed what was in these drawers. Hey, storage is storage and we needed a place to keep these sweet pieces of china. It really makes sense, since it’s near our dining room and kitchen. These precious antiques include my mom’s blue & white Syracuse “Celeste” and my Mema’s charming pastel floral Syracuse “Briarcliff”. To be honest, I rarely use them but when I do, it brings me happiness, a wave of memories and a chance to make new memories. We did change the drawer knobs to these new brass pulls from Ballard Designs. I think they speak to the age of the chest.

On the top, is a wooden lamp base from Pottery Barn, which we’ve had for decades, topped with a newish white linen shade from Target. The brown transfer ware bowl is an antique find, the plant (can’t remember the name of) is from Signal Mountain Nursery, as is the clay pot and the oval mirror was an antique mall find. When I found it, it was just an inexpensive frame. I took it to a glass company and they fitted it with the mirror. The colors of the wood remind me of some pieces of furniture we had in my childhood home.

Collection

I love collecting brown transfer ware! Whenever I look at it, the brown tone makes me think of chocolate. It’s such a great neutral, too. I especially love this bowl, with the acorns on it, perfect for the autumn season. I honestly can’t remember where I found this one but it was probably at a vintage shop or on eBay. It’s W. T. Copeland & Sons “Stoke Upon Trent”. It’s pretty and functional…sometimes I put chocolates in it during the holidays.
