Nature - Late April

April was just too abundant with flowers this spring to give it just one post. I guess the fact that we didn’t have a late freeze this year sure has helped all-things-blooming to thrive. I love walking around our yard and being in awe of God’s handiwork. I am thankful for every flower and tree, which brings such joy to my heart.

rhododendron

This plant has been here since we moved here in 1997 and was probably planted years before. I love the way it looks when the buds are about to burst.

mountain laurel

This, too, has been in our yard since before we moved in. It also looks ready to burst into bloom. It’s in the same family as rhododendron but a different genus.

“All beauty is only reflection. And whether I am conscious of it or not, any created thing of which I am amazed, it is the glimpse of His face to which I bow down.” - Ann Voskamp, “One Thousand Gifts”

violas

These little beauties survived the winter in our window boxes. We planted them last fall and they truly show off in the spring. They have the sweetest scent and are edible, if not treated with a pesticide.

begonia

I was so excited to begin planting our summer flowers after the danger of a frost/freeze had passed. These bright red blooms are potted on our deck and should last through the summer into fall.

impatiens

These cheery red flowers are in another window box, mostly shaded from the sun.

These little rosebuds are about to bloom and oh, my! We planted these heirloom roses about five or six years ago and they look the best they’ve ever looked this spring. David counted around 100 buds!

apple tree

My sister-in-law gave this apple tree to us in memory of my daddy, who went home to heaven in 2011. The little tree was about six or seven feet tall then. Today, it is huge! It’s beautiful throughout the year, especially when it blooms in the spring. It provides so much shade now and I can imagine, one day, maybe our grandkids could climb on its branches. These little apples will grow into larger ones and feed the birds and squirrels in our yard. It makes me smile everyday and I know my daddy would have loved it too.

hydrangea

Glory be. We will actually have blooms this summer! It’s been years since they’ve blossomed. Late freezes have claimed the flowers over recent years. We’re so excited to see the beautiful blue clusters in a few weeks!

maple tree

I love how the sunlight reveals the intricate veins of the bright green leaves! And there’s one little seed hanging on, before it twirls to the ground.

“Gratitude bestows reverence, allowing us to encounter everyday epiphanies, those transcendent moments of awe that change forever how we experience life and the world.” - Sarah Ban Breathnach from Ann Voskamp’s “One Thousand Gifts”
